Second graders have questions... lots and lots of questions. Author, Candace Fleming inspired them when she visited our school in December and they have been writing and asking questions ever since. Wanting to know more, they thought it would be a good idea to add their questions to our blog. Inquiring 2nd graders want to know...
How long have you been publishing books?
Why did you pick the word CLAPS to be your magic word?
How many books have you written during your entire life?
Have you ever written any true stories?
Why didn't you just put a big cage around your vegetables?
Why did you write a story about bunnies eating your vegetables?
In your stories, does the protagonist always win?
What made you want to be an author as an adult?
How does it feel to be an author?
Did you stop the bunnies from eating the vegetables in real life?
Why don't you write comic books?
What was the very first book you wrote?
Do you make any books for your family?
Is it hard to think of story ideas to write about?

Hey, Taylor Prairie, I see you had some questions for me. Well, I finally have some answers for you. Are you ready? Here I go....
1. I've been publishing books for about twelve years now. Of course, I've been writing for much longer than that. I've been writing stories since I was in elementary school.
2. I chose CLAPS because taken together, the letters spell an actual word, and that makes it easier to remember.
3. I've probably written a hundred books in my lifetime. Of course, not all of them have been published. Only about twenty of them have been good enough to become real books that you'd find on a library shelf. The other ones are resting in my "dead story drawer," where I put books that for some reason just didn't work out.
4. I do write "true" stories. Both my biographies, Ben Franklin's Almanac and Our Eleanor, are nonfiction. Every word in them is actual and factual.
5. I never thought about a big cage! Hmmmm...
6. I actually had a garden and the bunnies kept eating my vegetables. Since I couldn't make them stop in real life, I decided to write a story about it.
7. No, the protagonist doesn't always win. Mr. McGreely doesn't beat the bunnies, and Sunny Boy doesn't live an entirely quiet life.
8. I love books and stories. I decided to do what I love best!
9. Being an author is awesome!
10. I never stopped the bunnies from eating my vegetables. Instead, I've stopped gardening.
11. I don't really like comic books. I don't read them, and I can't draw, so... It makes sense to let someone who really loves and understand comic books do that work.
12. The very first book I wrote was in fifth grade. I don't remember the title, but it was a mystery and it had ten chapters. It was about twenty pages long.
13. I don't make books for my family. My sons aren't particularly interested in my stories, although the read them and are appreciative of what I do. I typically write for myself. I write the stories I would want to read.
14. I don't think so. I just look around the world. There's plenty of wonderful and interesting things out there to write about.
